Anesthesia is widely used all over the world for many reasons. It has made major surgeries and simple dental procedures much more pleasant. Patients don’t have to feel pain or discomfort when they are having their teeth pulled or they can fall into a deep sleep in Lala Land while having a heart transplant.
Crawford Williamson Long was born in Danielsville, Georgia on November 1, 1815. He recieved his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1839. During his years of schooling, he often saw people, and is assumed to have takin part, at parties known as “ether frolics”. At these parties, people would inhale the sulfuric ether to recieve a high for fun. As he watched, he saw that they often fell and ran into things but didn’t seem to feel the pain until the gas wore off. After these observations, Long decided to experiment with ether as an anesthetic.
After graduating college in 1841, Long moved back to Georgia and took over a medical practice in Jefferson. At this practice, he performed minor surgeries and delivered babies. His first procedure using ether was performed in 1842 on a young man with a tumor on his neck that needed to be removed. After the man woke, he didn’t even believe that any surgery had been done. Dr. Long had to show the man the cyst that was removed from his neck. Over the next several years, he used ether as an anesthetic on women during their pregnacies and deliveries as well as many other surgical procedures. While some locals believed he was involved in witchcraft, others believed that he was messing up God’s natural way to purify the soul.
In 1849, Crawford Long submitted his research and findings to the Medical College of Georgia. He had learned from the college that two others had already claimed to have discovered anesthesia. Horace Wells and Charles Jackson were only seeking for the fame and wealth, while Long only wanted to be recognized by his peers and collegues. The Southern Medical and Surgical Journal had published an article about his discovery in December 1849. Although Crawford Williamson Long never during his lifetime recieved full recognition of his findings with anesthesia, he was known to be the first to use an ether-based anesthesia.
Crawford Long married Caroline Swain in 1842. In the years after, the two had 12 children together, but only 7 survived to be adults. In 1851, he and his family moved to Athens, Georgia. Upon moving, Long and his brother, Robert, opened their own practice and pharmacy. In 1861, Dr. Long served in the Civil War as a surgeon to soldiers.
On June 16, 1878 Crawford Long died of a stroke shortly after delievering a baby. One year later, on June 18, 1879, the National Electic Medical Association declared Crawford Long as the discoverer of anesthesia. Since that day, he has been recognized all over the world. In his memory, his picture had been placed on a postage stamp and, in his name, there is the national celebration of Doctor’s Day on March 30. Even to this day, stands a museum where his medical practice once was in Jefferson.

Okay…hang with me…this is pretty lengthy…
I was a Pre-Pharmacy student who completed my coursework but switched to Pre-Nursing since I only had a 3.0. I have taken a lot of science courses to get this far and other than taking Microbiology, I am ready for nursing school. I made the mistake of only applying to one school last year and didn’t get in. I have applied at more schools this year (I live in Georgia, hubby is in the process of going back Active Army) and I am hopefully getting in.
I want to go into the Navy Nurse Commissioning Program. I have turned in my application and all documents and they have received my recommendation letters. All I need is my acceptance letter to Nursing school. My goal is to get my 4 year degree, commission as an officer into the Navy Nurse Corps, and hopefully to be assigned to Marine Corps unit.
Here is my question:
If I do NOT get into nursing school this Fall…and I will know in the next month if I got in or not…what should I do next? I am turning 25 next week and I feel that if I need to change course again, I want to make sure I chose a course that will reach my goals.
Thanks in advance.

I got accepted to both university of georgia and georgia tech. I have the biggest trouble deciding between the two. I am not very fond of math and science, but it is manageable for me. I took Ap Chemistry, Ap Physics, and Ap Biology in high school and was able to get A’s in all the classes. I am also taking AP Calculus..although i depise calculus, i was still able to pull off an A.
Here’s my problem. I do not intend to be an engineer. However, I like Tech for its Atlanta location and its reputation.Furthermore, people keep telling me that if i graduate from Tech, it will be easier for me to find jobs. However, a major con is that the courses are so rigorous at Tech, and people go crazy studying.
On the other hand, UGA is very well known for being a party school. Most kids don’t care for their education and come home drunk all the time. The con is that I did not get into the Honors Program, so I don’t know if it’s worth going there. However, UGA does offer a wide variety of career-oriented programs that Tech does not.
I don’t know what I want to do in the future. I thought about pharmacy…UGA has a pharmacy school….Although i do not think i will do anything related to engineering, I might find something I like at Tech……
I was wondering if i can get some tips…i feel so clueless and frustrated !!!!!!!!!

My husband is interested in going to college to become a pharmacist. I am trying to figure out where we need to begin to get him started, but am lost. I have found a couple of local schools that offer pre-pharmacy, but thats as far as I am getting. He works full time and does not plan on changing jobs until after her graduates, so I am trying to find a school where he can take core classes online after work, and then once he gets further along in the program can begin taking classes on campus. Can anyone please help me figure out where to begin looking. When I try getting info through search engines I can only find info about becoming a pharmacy technician, not an actual pharmacist. Please help!!

I have decided to major in pharmacy and because I live in southern Georgia my choices are limited. Only a few schools in my state offer pharmacy programs and 1 of them is the University of GA (which is really difficult to get into so I don’t want to go there). Mercer University is another option. They are private and therefore expensive. However I have a renewable $10,000 a year scholarship with them but the average complete cost per year even with the scholarship will be $22,000. Another option is to go out of state to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU). Of course I will have to pay out of state fees but won’t after a certain amount of time can I maintain residency? FAMU will cost about $27,000 a year until I maintain residency. So all in all, which is the most cost efficient choice. Both schools have good pharmacy schools so money is the major object at hand here. I know finaicial aid will help but the balance portion will be my responsibility.

I am about to begin my second year at a two-year community college. I was undecided on majors for a while and finally decided to begin taking pre-pharmacy classes. I plan to apply to pharmacy school at Mercer University and the University of Georgia.
My question is, will pharmacy schools not consider me because I’m completing pre-pharmacy requirements at a community college rather than a university or does it matter? I know I need to keep my GPA high and do exceptionally well on the PCAT, especially since I’m currently going the community college route.
Would you recommend transferring to a university now or finishing at this college I’m already attending? I don’t want to do something that would hurt my chances at acceptance and I really don’t know what to do.

I feel that there aren’t many jobs in that field and I don’t really want to be a library assistant. I know I am interested in Social Work and was wondering if I get my associates degree in it, could I find a descent job and try to get my bachelor’s degree at the same time? As of right now my mom only wants me to get my associate’s degree because I need to get a job and I understand that. Eventually I want to get a good job and get my own place but was wondering if you guys think there is more opportunity to get a job in social work than Information Science Technology? I also heard the health industry was going and maybe I could just go to a technical school and be a dental hygienist or pharmacy technician?
