]]> My goal is to be a pharmacist, and I am currently attending the University of Kansas, studying on that track. I am in my third semester, and for whatever reason, I totally lost all motivation for schoolwork this semester. I knew my apathy was going to get me in trouble, and I did care, but could not find the drive to get back into the swing of things. It may honestly have been a bout of depression, or I may have cracked under the pressure (read on), I’m not sure why I couldn’t find the motivation to bail myself out while I still could this semester, when I still had the motivation to move toward my career.
Now, while I have A’s in my two honors elective courses and expect to do well on finals, my science course grades are in the hole. My organic chemistry lecture grade is at a D, and my O.chem lab and microbiology lecture grades will be curved, but they are only around C level right now.
Previously I have had all A’s in high school, and A’s with only 2 B’s my freshman year of college.
Finals are next week, my pharmacy school applications are due in January and February, and I have discovered that in order to have the proper science GPA to get in to the KU pharmacy school, I would need to get at least a B on my O.chem final, and an A in every other class.
I am going to try my butt off, but in all honesty, it’s a task that’s near impossible and I’m not sure I should waste hundreds of dollars in pharmacy school applications when I am fairly certain my GPA will not be high enough after this semester. I really want to just retake some or most of this semester’s coursework.
The trouble is, my parents have told me that if I do not get into KU’s pharmacy school for Fall of ‘09, then they will pull me out of KU and make me go study something else at a school in our home state. I really don’t want to leave KU despite my bad semester for a number of reasons, I like the school, I like the town, I like my friends here, my (very serious) boyfriend is here, and I have actually liked the majority of my classes up until this semester. If they impose this ultimatum, I don’t know what I will do, as I’m not sure what I would like as a backup career route, because so many jobs I think I would enjoy (working with animals, etc.) my parents don’t view as ‘realistic’ career choices.
How do I explain to them that it’s just not going to happen this year, and to let me stay here? I pay half my tuition now, but if I could stay, I would take out the loans to pay all of it. I realise my trouble is my own fault, I just want my parents to give me a second chance to get it right instead of just pulling me out or disowning me for continuing on at KU when they want to pull me out.
My boyfriend is fully supportive of whatever decision I make and would help me finance it (even if I just decided I wanted a semester off to regroup so long as I returned to school), but my parents would view my relying on him as rejection of them. Plus, I don’t want to be that kind of burden on him. But why can’t my parents be as understanding and helpful as my boyfriend?
What do I say to diffuse the situation? I know they will be mad, but I am so scared they will just yank me out and away from my HOME here in Lawrence and not let me go back…

]]> I exceed in Science related classes and did well on my ACT, my GPA was butchered because I took a digital animation class worth two credits which I did horrible in. so now I only have a 3.0 I’m only a Junior and it’s going up now, i’ll probably have a 3.5 by the end of sr. year.
