(horrible stats i know) but i volunterr ALOT and do one instrument and one sport. i want to go to college for pre-pharmacy and then end up going to another college for my pharmD
i dont know where to go to college though. i am the type of person that does not do well on my own. so i was thinking about going to college in florida because mjy two best friends are applying down there too. i really like the city of pittsburg though and i realise instate tuition would be cheaper. im just very into the night life, im good at juggling parties and school work so i would want a very urban setting. i like big colleges too, but ones that still have a small student to faculty ratio.
is there any schools you know of on the east coast(anywhere from florida up to newyork(but not past newyork because i dont do well with cold weather)
i really appreciate your help if you could give me any personal experience with picking your own college or schools you would suggest that i would be able to get into, or cities that have good universities where i could apply at.

I had originally posted this question under election, but did not receive much response.
In 2nd grade (30 something yrs ago) I was told I was “too slow” to keep up with the rest of the class. I was given a coloring book and put to the side of the class room while the others perticipated in reading. I dropped out of school the first week of the 9th grade.
Later when my son was diagnosed with Dyslexia I decided that I would be tested. I learned that I had an IQ of 139 and my LD was due to Petit Mal Seizures.
I am now 40yrs old and have returned to college working towards a degree in nursing. I have so far been able to hold onto 3.90 GPA. I personally receive no help for my disability because I have learned my strengths and weaknesses. However, not everyone is so fortunate. How many others are there out there that still have a chance to further themselves if they only knew how? Most importantly; who can help them?
The following information was taken from the Learning Disabilities Association of America website.
Adults with Learning Disabilities: An overview
Not so long ago, it was widely believed that learning disabilities – such as dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalcula – emerged when a child first tackled academic subjects in 1st grade, at age 6 or 7, and disappeared when a student left academic pursuits behind as an adult. We know now, however, that learning disabilities are lifelong in nature. Assessments of the pre-reading skills of very young children at 3 or 4 are accurate predictors of reading difficulties to come, and while many adults who’ve benefited from quality education targeted to meet their needs do learn to compensate and to a degree overcome their learning disabilities, they never actually go away.
Whatever the set of factors causing the rise in students with learning disabilities, one fact is clear: there were many, many children a decade or generations ago who had learning disabilities that were never diagnosed and who never received appropriate treatment or instructional assistance.
What became of those people with learning disabilities who are now adults? Many of them dropped out of high school, frustrated by school failures. If they were girls, statistics indicate that a very high proportion of them became pregnant almost immediately upon leaving school, seeking life fulfillment outside of the academic experience that proved to be so unrewarding. If they were men and lucky, they found jobs – for the most part entry level and dead end jobs – and got on with life as best they could with low literacy skills. (One individual of note sold beer in the KingDome in Seattle for 17 years before being diagnosed with learning disabilities: he went to college, attained a master’s degree and is now a prominent advocate working for the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C.)
Those not so fortunate turned to crime or became victims of crime, seeking medicinal treatment for their neurological disorders in bottles and vials not found in better pharmacies. Although the Department of Justice, Bureau of Statistics has not been tracking disabilities among our nation’s prison populations, educated estimates range from 40% to 65% or even higher for inmates and parolees who have learning disabilities, mild mental retardation, and psychiatric or addictive disorders, or some combination thereof. As many as 65% of the children incarcerated in juvenile correctional facilities prove to be eligible for special education services.
Assessments were run on all enrollees of the Kansas welfare system shortly after the reform measures instituting the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program were passed. 36% of the women tested as having learning disabilities or mild mental retardation. Several years later, after TANF moved the easier-to-place recipients into employment, the hard core unemployed who remained on the rolls represented an even higher proportion of people with disabilities. Over half of the TANF caseload today can be assumed to have learning disabilities, mental retardation, psychiatric or addictive disorders, or a combination thereof.
Successful students with learning disabilities have gone on to attain graduate degrees at distinguished universities, and some have authored books to encourage their peers and proteges. Yet even among the highest achievers, life with learning disabilities is not always rosy. There is the bright young woman who managed to obtain a master’s degree but cannot pass the Pennsylvania MCATS to enter med school; there is the certified special education teacher who cannot now pass the new high stakes teacher exams in Virginia; there is the priest with a master’s degree unable to enroll in the doctoral program of his choice due to entrance exams of a design he’ll never pass.
Add to the mix the fact that 50% of learning disabilities appear to be inherited genetically, and one realizes that all adults with learning disabilities are at

Anesthesia is widely used all over the world for many reasons. It has made major surgeries and simple dental procedures much more pleasant. Patients don’t have to feel pain or discomfort when they are having their teeth pulled or they can fall into a deep sleep in Lala Land while having a heart transplant.
Crawford Williamson Long was born in Danielsville, Georgia on November 1, 1815. He recieved his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1839. During his years of schooling, he often saw people, and is assumed to have takin part, at parties known as “ether frolics”. At these parties, people would inhale the sulfuric ether to recieve a high for fun. As he watched, he saw that they often fell and ran into things but didn’t seem to feel the pain until the gas wore off. After these observations, Long decided to experiment with ether as an anesthetic.
After graduating college in 1841, Long moved back to Georgia and took over a medical practice in Jefferson. At this practice, he performed minor surgeries and delivered babies. His first procedure using ether was performed in 1842 on a young man with a tumor on his neck that needed to be removed. After the man woke, he didn’t even believe that any surgery had been done. Dr. Long had to show the man the cyst that was removed from his neck. Over the next several years, he used ether as an anesthetic on women during their pregnacies and deliveries as well as many other surgical procedures. While some locals believed he was involved in witchcraft, others believed that he was messing up God’s natural way to purify the soul.
In 1849, Crawford Long submitted his research and findings to the Medical College of Georgia. He had learned from the college that two others had already claimed to have discovered anesthesia. Horace Wells and Charles Jackson were only seeking for the fame and wealth, while Long only wanted to be recognized by his peers and collegues. The Southern Medical and Surgical Journal had published an article about his discovery in December 1849. Although Crawford Williamson Long never during his lifetime recieved full recognition of his findings with anesthesia, he was known to be the first to use an ether-based anesthesia.
Crawford Long married Caroline Swain in 1842. In the years after, the two had 12 children together, but only 7 survived to be adults. In 1851, he and his family moved to Athens, Georgia. Upon moving, Long and his brother, Robert, opened their own practice and pharmacy. In 1861, Dr. Long served in the Civil War as a surgeon to soldiers.
On June 16, 1878 Crawford Long died of a stroke shortly after delievering a baby. One year later, on June 18, 1879, the National Electic Medical Association declared Crawford Long as the discoverer of anesthesia. Since that day, he has been recognized all over the world. In his memory, his picture had been placed on a postage stamp and, in his name, there is the national celebration of Doctor’s Day on March 30. Even to this day, stands a museum where his medical practice once was in Jefferson.

I have a summary offense for retail theft in Pennsylvania, which is considered lower than a misdemeanor, but is still on my record and looks pretty bad. I know that getting hired to a lot of places, however, depends on what the nature of the crime has to do with the job that you’re applying for. After I’ve had this on my record, I was able to get financial aid, and a waitressing job. I decided not to even try for any retail jobs at first. Most companies, though, when you apply, say that “they understand people make mistakes and that a criminal record will not necessairly bar you from employment with them”. So I thought screw it, I have nothing to lose, and applied anyway, telling them the truth about my conviction. If I don’t get those jobs, it won’t be the end of the world or anything, but I’m afraid that after I get my Pharmacy Tech diploma from school, they won’t hire me because of it. I mean, if I got a waitressing job you’d think with a degree I could get this one too.

I will be working on ACT work as much as I can to prepare for the test and make an attempt at a high score; will take the actual SAT perhaps late January
A little something about me…
-Junior in HS
-Key Club Officer
-Co Captain of tennis team
-Played ice hockey on HS team (2 years)
-Won two consecutive “Most Improved Awards”
-Future Business Leaders of America member
-ex Member of Technical Crew of my HS
-Lives in Pennsylvania
-of Korean descent
-”First generation college student” (parents immigrants from Korea)
-Uncle/aunt of immediate family went to Penn; uncle also went to Univ. of Chicago (works for Johnson and Johnson as advertising medicine)
-Freshmen year wasn’t so great… low GPA because of “slacking off”
-Sophomore year- only 1 honors class (English) and rest academic; also took Math Lab because did not meet state requirements on PSAT, but I’m not sure exactly why (I’m good with numbers; possibly because of not working hard in past ~2yrs of middle school); also maintained 4.0 GPA first three marking periods and 3.8 in 4th MP unweighted
-Junior year (current)-3.8 GPA with honors chem and AP euro as weighted classes during first MP, not doing so well right now in terms that 2nd MP has just began, but C in chemistry and low B in AP Euro; also have to take Math lab once again but I’m totally fine with everything being reviewed
-Interested in a business field, biology, not sure about chemistry anymore because of my current chem. teacher and stuff being learnt (formulas/equations)
-Diagnosed with ADD (attention deficit disorder)
-Born in US; knows how to speak the English language in fluent manner, taken Spanish since 8th grade, not so strong in own language of Korean
-May take duel enrollment classes next year as senior (which are after school and meet once a week; options are mandarin chinese or philosophy for me– these gives college credits in state of PA and HS credit)
-Interested in something like what my uncle does, which is working as an advertiser for Johnson and Johnson, Inc. or business oriented; maybe Pharmacy
-Seeking 6 figure income or close
-Dream school suggested by aunt as University of Chicago, but that is a difficult school to get in from my standpoint; I can work at it
-Weak PSAT in 10th grade with score of 128 (was not taken very seriously as I should have)
-Taken Princeton Review course during summer of 08′ (highest score being about 510 in math, mid 400 in reading, and 560 in writing– I know I can do much better and hit 600s)
-Hard-working parents and are somewhat middle class citizens; although all is made from hard work towards income and not by endowment, etc (nice school, nice neighborhood, etc)
-Interested in colleges like Penn State main, Pitt, Univ. of Chicago, UPenn (but my chances are very low), Boston College, Boston Univ., George Mason Univ. (close to DC for intern, but heard it is like a community school), James Madison Univ —-I have more on list but listed some

I’m going to be graduating from college in May with a pretty bad GPA (2.84), although I’m admittedly in a difficult major (Bioengineering) in a tough school (University of Pennsylvania). I was involved in school activities, but not to a degree where I could use it as an excuse, and I didn’t work during the school year.
Although I know that after I get my first job/go to grad school the slate will be wiped clean, my GPA is a big obstacle to that first step. Now I’m applying to pharmacy schools and looking for jobs, but I’m terrified that someone will ask me why my GPA is so bad and I won’t have any idea what to say (it was really hard doesn’t really cut it).
anyone have any advice?
I’m thinking about applying to them, and in the case that I do get accepted into, which I think there is a good chance of, I want to know which college is best to attend for pre med. I would like to go to med school in the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, or Massachusetts, if that makes any difference. Thanks.
