No, unless they are working in a customer service position at a mail order pharmacy. There are actually potentially more work at home jobs for pharmacists than techs.

No there is no way to do that, but many people work as a medical transcriptionist at home and a pharmaceutical background would definately help someone land that type of job.

Since a Pharmacy Tech fills prescriptions and does other duties in a Pharmacy, I don’t see how you could work at home.

Every state has different requirements, so you must first look at your state. Some state register their technicians, others license (my state does), and others do neither. A certified technician is one who has passed one of the big two national certification exams by the PTCB or ExCPT exam. Becoming nationally certified does not automatically make you a technician for the state you live in, almost all states require you to fill out an application and in many cases complete other criteria. It means that after taking the course (can range from 1 to 2 years depending on credits taken), you have to take a test to become certified/gain a license that basically says you can be around drugs in a pharmacy because you have the necessary knowledge about doses, side effects, etc. The test is usually controlled by a state board.

Yes, if you live in a state which regulates that profession. A couple of states do not regulate the profession, and therefore, no license is needed.

No, I just got hired as a pharmacy tech (two days ago) and I have no previous experience. They did not require one. They are, however, going to put me through a program that spans over 2 years and pay for it themselves. This must be the license you are talking about. But I did not need a license to get the job. Maybe your local hospitals won’t require one either and may pay for the license.

Check out the prereqs for pharmacy schools that you’re interested in. Normally, prereqs can be fulfilled after 2-3 years of classes, if you take the right courses, then you can apply for pharmacy school.

im studying for the exam right now too and taking it next week. i signed up for medpreps.com and they have a lot of question(well over 3000+).i feel like it has prepared me well. i have been studying for a month now and i feel like im ready. Also 3 of my friends who work as a pharmacy tech told me that if you have been working at a pharmacy for 2 years, the exam should be relatively easy for you, especially the drug names. i would reccomend on just brushing up on some law and math and you will be good to go

First you need to check your state board of pharmacy regulations for pharmacy technicians. Some states require that you go through certain approved schools for training, on-the-job training, registering with the state board, obtaining PTCB certification, all of these, a combination of these, or none. So it is very important to look at your state’s requirements first. Since I don’t know which state you are in, you can look up each state’s requirements at http://www.careerstep.com/courses/pharmacy-technician-faq/?uid=ref10077 and go to FAQ#4 Do I need to be certified. There you will find a pdf document with a list of requirements by state.

If your state requires certain approved schools, then you need to go to your state board of pharmacy website to find the list of approved schools. Otherwise if they don’t care which school you go to, I would look at job openings to see what qualifications employers are asking for. There is a really good online course that was designed to help graduates pass the PTCB exam. I have heard a lot of good things about them. It is self-paced so you can start whenever you want and work on it as fast as you want. But first check your state’s requirements so you can get an idea of what you need to do and what type of schooling you may need.

NONE are good because it is not necessary to go to school to be a pharmacy tech. There’s no “Degree” necessary. You only need to be licensed/registered with your state. Look up your state board of pharmacy’s website and find requirements for technicians there. In many states you only need to take the PTCB exam. You can study online or buy a book and study for that test. Any “pharmacy tech school” that your state does not require is a waste of time and money. The best way to easily ace the test is to work in a pharmacy for a while first. You may hate it and not want to spend the money on the test. Or you may love it and find out your employer will reimburse you for the test.

If you want to be a pharmacy tech, you will eventually need to get PTCB certified. You could start at Walgreens as a pharmacy tech and they will give you the training and PAY for you to take the PTCB test. Not only that, but they give you a raise after you pass it!

Don’t waste your time with CVS. There’s a reason why Walgreens is the leader in the drugstore industry.

Be sure to get there early or you will not be issued a calculator because they have a limited number of calculators. If you are not issued a calculator, then you will have to use the crummy calculator on the computer screen. This will make it really difficult to do the PTCB exam because you will have to toggle between the test window and the calculator window to do the exam.

Do well in school, especially math & science. Take advantage of a Latin course, if possible, since prescriptions are written in Latin shorthand. Talk to your local pharmacist about their education & other requirements for his/her job & check out various schools that have pharmacy programs, such as Ohio Northern Univ., to let Mom know you are serious.

Pharmacists have to have as much education as doctors & have to be recertified by the state every so often. They are also under state & federal regulations. They cannot dispense certain drugs, like narcotics, without going through certain guidelines. The pharmacists that my Mom works with have PDA’s with all sorts of information on medicines available on the market. Most pharmacists work during regular business hours. They aren’t expected to be on call day & night, unless they work at a hospital or a pharmacy that offers that service.

Do your best not to nag her. Let your actions prove it. Even if she doesn’t approve, sounds like you will make your Dad proud no matter what. Good luck!!

It may be hard to explain this to a person who’s been living her life feeling the way she does about pharmacists, that being a pharmacist is not what she feels it is.

Her understanding will come gradually, though. Just keep telling her that being a pharmacist is like any other occupation – it requires skills, as well as integrity, honesty, and other moral virtues, regardless of what she may have encountered in India (I really don’t know the reason why pharmacists in India are not respected, so I’m just talking in general here).

Show her, as well, that you, as a future pharmacist, are a good person. She may change her opinion of pharmacists based on your own actions, if they are truly virtuous. Depending on how deeply entrenched your mother’s views are in her, this may be variably difficult.

I’m afraid, however, that there is no magic word to make her change her opinion. Some things come gradually. So, the best I can tell you is that if you wish to convince your mother that being a pharmacist is a good thing, then you should be a good pharmacist.

Tell her you make a 100K a year or more, without the stress of surgery or making a wrong diagnosis and being responsible for that, possibly getting sued. Less risk – great money.

Tell her it may not be respectfull in other countries, but it is here, and this is where you currently live.
