This Question Is From: Pharmacy Technician Schools in Wisconsin and has 3 Answers
Hey, I’m just looking for a little advice here. I know it’s my decision in the end, but I’m just looking to see if anyone else has experienced something similar and can offer advice.
I’m currently going into this year as a sophomore at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. It’s over 1200 miles from my hometown in Wisconsin, but I really like the city. However, the school itself isn’t living up to what I had expected. The classes are far too easy, and many of the teachers I have had so far have been less than enjoyable. The counselors all seem overwhelmed, and I was denied a declaration of my major because the school had over-accepted so many pharmacy major students. Also, the school spirit, which was so high and so much fun at my high school, is almost non-existent here. And even though I enjoy the city, every now and then I just want to get away from all the urbanness, which is almost impossible lacking a car.
The school I’m thinking about transferring to is UW-Madison. I have a good deal of friends from High School already going there, and have offered to hook me up with an apartment if I do transfer. I already know the student body is wayyyy more spirited than Northeastern, but until recently had never really considered the other pros of transferring there. My grades are easily good enough to earn entry, and dropping my brother off for college the other day made me realize how sweet the city life itself is. My previous visits, all of them in mid-winter, had led me to believe the city to be far more barren and lifeless than it truly is. It is very similar to Boston, only on a much more local feel (3 1/2 hour drive from my hometown, and splitting parking costs with my brother we could easily keep a car there)
Oh, and as a final note. UW-Madison, a far more highly rated school, costs 1/2 the cost of Northeastern. Not even counting the plane tickets and the over-summer storage fees. I’m not going to lie, that has its own appeal right there.
Basically what I’m wondering is, do all schools have the same shortcomings as Northeastern seems to? Has anyone else made a transfer under similar conditions? And if so, how do you feel about your choice?

You know, from reading your post, I’d say that you’ve already made up your mind.
If you don’t feel you’re being challenged, and like so many things about UW, then do it! That business about not being able to declare your major is very troublesome as well; that’s a very specific major, and if you’re not declared, there are many Pharm classes you’ll be denied entry to.
As a side note, about the professors, did you know that you can see how other students have rated them at MySpace? Just click on “More”, and then “Schools,” and find yours. It’s saved me from many, many crummy professors!

Transfer, as you said, better school at half the price. What more do you want?
No, not all schools are like Northeastern at all. You said UW-Madison was a more highly-rated school, have your friends/brother led you to believe that the classes there will be more challenging? If so, you should definitely consider transferring. It sounds like Northeastern has just about no pros (at least as far as you’re concerned) and many cons, whereas UW-Madison has lots of pros. It’s too late to transfer for the start of the year, but you can transfer after another semester. I would say, if UW-Madison has equivalent or better classes, go there!
