This Question Is From: Pharmacy Technician Schools in Tennessee and has 3 Answers
I can’t go to a school or do any program because I’m already in college for full time. I know there is some kind of test to take to become certified, but how do I take it? A friend of mine said that she just got a job, and learned everything as she went along, then took the test to become certified later. How realisitic is that working somewhere like Walgreen’s, CVS, or Rite Aid? Should I just to a local pharmacy and ask somebody.? Should I study some kind of book? Is there a book you can study? Can you be a pharmacy tech without going to school? If so, how?

Officially, you just have to pass the test. Go to the PTCB(pharmacy technician certification board) website and it gives you all the information you need on how to take the test. The test is $129.00. You don’t have to go to school and could just use a study guide, but some of the information is learned by exposure to the meds on the job and by using the calculations day to day. Hope that helps
My friend actually works at a pharmacy in a grocery store in Tennessee. He originally worked in the photo lab and then they went to shut it down and they transferred him to the pharmacy as a tech. I believe he had to go through a LOT of training before he was allowed to work though. I’m sure if you went to a pharmacy that’s hiring techs and talked to the manager you could ask them what the specific requirements are, and when you hand in your application and/or resume they might be more likely to hire you because they have a “face” to put with it, and it also shows that you’re genuinely interested in doing it.
You basically just have to find a place that’s hiring and apply. CVS & walgreens train you, you don’t need to be certified before you get the job. They train you & get you certified WHILE you get paid!
