Anesthesia is widely used all over the world for many reasons. It has made major surgeries and simple dental procedures much more pleasant. Patients don’t have to feel pain or discomfort when they are having their teeth pulled or they can fall into a deep sleep in Lala Land while having a heart transplant.
Crawford Williamson Long was born in Danielsville, Georgia on November 1, 1815. He recieved his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1839. During his years of schooling, he often saw people, and is assumed to have takin part, at parties known as “ether frolics”. At these parties, people would inhale the sulfuric ether to recieve a high for fun. As he watched, he saw that they often fell and ran into things but didn’t seem to feel the pain until the gas wore off. After these observations, Long decided to experiment with ether as an anesthetic.
After graduating college in 1841, Long moved back to Georgia and took over a medical practice in Jefferson. At this practice, he performed minor surgeries and delivered babies. His first procedure using ether was performed in 1842 on a young man with a tumor on his neck that needed to be removed. After the man woke, he didn’t even believe that any surgery had been done. Dr. Long had to show the man the cyst that was removed from his neck. Over the next several years, he used ether as an anesthetic on women during their pregnacies and deliveries as well as many other surgical procedures. While some locals believed he was involved in witchcraft, others believed that he was messing up God’s natural way to purify the soul.
In 1849, Crawford Long submitted his research and findings to the Medical College of Georgia. He had learned from the college that two others had already claimed to have discovered anesthesia. Horace Wells and Charles Jackson were only seeking for the fame and wealth, while Long only wanted to be recognized by his peers and collegues. The Southern Medical and Surgical Journal had published an article about his discovery in December 1849. Although Crawford Williamson Long never during his lifetime recieved full recognition of his findings with anesthesia, he was known to be the first to use an ether-based anesthesia.
Crawford Long married Caroline Swain in 1842. In the years after, the two had 12 children together, but only 7 survived to be adults. In 1851, he and his family moved to Athens, Georgia. Upon moving, Long and his brother, Robert, opened their own practice and pharmacy. In 1861, Dr. Long served in the Civil War as a surgeon to soldiers.
On June 16, 1878 Crawford Long died of a stroke shortly after delievering a baby. One year later, on June 18, 1879, the National Electic Medical Association declared Crawford Long as the discoverer of anesthesia. Since that day, he has been recognized all over the world. In his memory, his picture had been placed on a postage stamp and, in his name, there is the national celebration of Doctor’s Day on March 30. Even to this day, stands a museum where his medical practice once was in Jefferson.

All introductions need to give a small preview of what the reader will encounter throughout the paper. If this were my paper, I would have started it off with the anecdote about Long’s experience at ether frolics. The description you give is both eye catching and funny to read. I believe if you start the essay off with this, it will provide great insight into the main topic of your essay. At the end of your introduction you should mesh your entire essay together with your thesis statement such as, “These ether frolics eventually lead to Long’s discovery of anesthesia”. The following paragraph should be your explanation of what anesthesia is and the biography of Long.
Also, try to exclude terms like “Lala Land” from a research paper. A research paper is supposed to be professional and childish references aren’t needed.
