I am 40ish, a male, currently unemployed. Im looking to get away from the factory world and find something more stable. A job that cant be pulled out from under me and sent to Mexico. I qualify for a program called TAA/WiA that will send me to school for up to two years free of charge, and allows me to draw unemployment the whole time im in school. Supposedly everything is paid for. Heres the problem. I have no clue what to take or do with the rest of my life.
I was given a list of careers to help give me a idea on where to start and to research, one of the options on the list was pharmacy technician. Ive done research online and also by going to various pharmacies, some of what i hear i like, other parts concern me. My main concern is if i go through this program will i be able to get a job related to it or not.
There are two well known schools in my area which offer programs as a pharmacy tech, both programs last around 9 months.
Mainly what im trying to find out is from people who know of this field, how hard would it be for a guy to go through this school and then get a job as a pharmacy tech? Is their a demand for this? Ive noticed most pharmacies i go to have mostly women working in them, would i be looked as a oddball and out of place showing up trying to get into this career?
I know this isnt a glamorous career, and i know the pay probably isnt that great but im just checking into various options right now, and i pretty much would rather have a career that is stable which might not pay as much than to take another factory job that pays good but has no security.

Very high stress and very low pay. I had one guy hit me with his wallet, another called me a raciest. One day a woman came up to me and was grilling me over something the pharmacist did wrong and then she realized that I knew her very well and she knew me. She was very embarrassed, but when you are a tech you will be dealing with the worst of the worst and you are there to take care of them for the pharmacist so he does not have to stop verifying prescriptions.
Most of the time people come up to the counter ready to fight for their meds if they have to. And more than willing to take your face off if they need to.
