This Question Is From: Pharmacy Technician Schools in North Carolina and has 3 Answers
I am considering going into pharmacy in college, and I am still not 100% sure of it. If you can answer some of these questions about the major and the related jobs, I would appreciate it very much. First of all, is the pharmacy major really THAT challenging that I can’t even have a social life? How tough is it? Secondly, once I obtain the PharmD. degree, I might want to work in a pharmaceutical company; do you think that working in a company would be a fun job? What types of different jobs are available once I graduate with the PharmD. degree? Is there any sort of advancement once I get hired by a pharmaceutical company? Lastly, I chose some of the schools that I might want to go to. They are University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill – School of Pharmacy, Rutgers University – Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, and University of Texas at Austin – College of Pharmacy. Does anyone know about any of these schools?

How tough is it? REALLY tough. I often quip that I wish I could put my family and friends in a freezer and just concentrate on school. Orgo, biochem and medchem are just starters- then you have pharmacology. You have to memorize all the drugs in each class, their dose ranges, side effects, toxicities, the kinetics (absorption, distribution, metabolysis, excretion) how they interact with other drugs, how they affect certain populations (genomics, elder, pedi) THEN you get therapeutics; how to use them, why, when.
Do you think that working in a company would be a fun job?
Sure. But what is YOUR idea of fun? Working with people or working in a lab? Industry jobs are few and far between- better have a really good GPA, a contact or two and some research experience in school (take industry or research as electives- HINT!)
What types of different jobs are available once I graduate with the PharmD. degree? Home care pharmacy, community, clinical, managed care, compounding, management, education….lots more than just community!
Is there any sort of advancement once I get hired by a pharmaceutical company?
Absolutely but they vary by company. Look at the APhA website, and check out other pharmacy professional organizations.
I don’t know a lot about the schools you are looking at- I’m in the northeast and went to an accelerated PharmD in the town I lived in.
This is a career switch for me- it’s been a hard few years but I am almost there. I am interviewing now. It’s a great career- good luck to you!!!
I would assume it is a tough degree to get. One mistake and someone could die. Because of the drug dispensed or lack of .
I don’t actually work in the pharmacy field, but I can provide a website that talks about the general education requirements, working conditions and average salary. I’m sure that you have to be really strong in the sciences: http://www.bls.gov/oco Good luck to you!
