QUESTION:

Feed back please. I haven’t made a conclusion yet though…
As I sat in my first chemistry class at Northern Illinois University, I had no idea that the first lecture would set the pace for the rest of my life. I enrolled in this course because when I came to college, I was still undecided about what kind of career I wanted to pursue. During the introductory lecture, Dr. Gaillard told us about the discovery of the drug, Aspirin, and how it was synthesized from willow bark to become the versatile drug that it is today. Keeping this lecture in mind, I went back to my dormitory and began researching jobs in pharmacy and the research that allows for new drug discovery. From the information I have found on pharmacy, I am enthusiastic to learn more and be a part of this field of healthcare. Throughout my college career, I have discovered that I am determined and well qualified to become a pharmacist.
There are many reasons why I wish to study pharmacy and ultimately become a pharmacist. I believe in the health care system and how it can assist in bettering the lives of others. In the health care system, pharmacists are among the most accessible and visible health care professionals. Pharmacists are the mediator between doctors and patients, as well as between patients and their insurance companies.
In order to become a pharmacist, I must complete the Pharm D. program. With the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, I will be able to practice pharmacy in a variety of ways including retail, hospital, clinical, along with many other settings. After I receive the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree, I would like to practice in a retail or hospital pharmacy so that I will be able to work closely with patients. Later in my career I would like to explore other fields of pharmacy such as research and developing drug therapy.
I have much experience working with the public, as every job I have held works directly with people in the community. While working at Bartlett Fresh Market and Marshall Field’s, I learned many skills when working with the public. Firstly, I have learned how to remain calm and patient in stressful situations. I also learned how to communicate with many different kinds of people. From working at Oakwood Country Club, I have learned how to multitask while still paying attention to detail. These qualities, along with many others, are very relative to pharmacy and will contribute to my success as a pharmacist.
Science has always been an interest of mine, which is why I chose to major in biological sciences. As a student majoring in biology, with a minor in chemistry, my coursework has been demanding and challenging in order to prepare me for pharmacy school. The biology and chemistry courses I have taken have taught me great analytical skills. Courses in math and physics have sharpened my problem solving skills and have taught me to pay great attention to detail. These skills I have learned through my studies are vital for a prospective pharmacist to possess.
My interest in learning and my drive to succeed has helped me to excel in academics at Northern Illinois University. I have been on the Dean’s List every year and was recently recognized as being in the top 8% of students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This year, I became a part of Dr. Kui Shen’s research team by being selected to participate in the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program. I spend a few days a week with Dr. Shen in his laboratory observing and helping him when necessary. His research deals with protein function in biological problems, such as cancer and he is working toward discovering drugs to help prevent these problems.
In addition to my academic achievements, I am also the treasurer for the Pre-professional Association at NIU. This club is comprised of students who are on the healthcare track. In this club, I am able to practice leadership skills by arranging for speakers to give presentations at our bi-weekly meetings. I also demonstrate great responsibility by handling the organizations’ funds and membership.
