Pharmacy Vs Chemical Engineering?

Pharmacy Vs Chemical Engineering?

This Question Is From: Pharmacy Technician Schools in Georgia and has 3 Answers

I’m wondering which direction I should go in.
Currently, I am deciding where to go between these schools: Rutgers Pharmacy, Georgia Tech’s Engineering, Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering (currently waiting for Cooper Union).
I hear both directions are difficult and really time consuming (not to mention I have terrible time management). I love chemistry, so both pass in that regard. However, are there any more reasons to go to one place over the other, besides the cost (I live in NJ). maybe:
- Salary Difference
- Job Availibility
- Other insider info on the specific schools
- etc.
thanks, i greatly appreciate it!

Both jobs have very good prospects. Both are in high demand. The mean salary for pharmacists is around $120,000, while the mean for chemical engineers is around $80,000 i believe. But chemical engineers can make considerably more if they’re high up in a company.
If you enjoy math and computers, then you should go into chemical engineering. Note that chemical engineering is different from chemistry. In chemical engineering, you design pathways, such as converting salt water to pure water:
salt water —> distillation column —-> condenser —–> water
    Chemical Engineers ask:
How efficient is this pathway? can we achieve pure water with a less input of energy (thermodynamics)? How do we control the pollution (reaction engineering)?
A common pathway for chemical engineers to take is to get their mba after they get their chemical engineering degree. These grad’s can make well over $100,000.
Go into pharmacy if you prefer biochemistry and biology to math. I wouldnt recommend pharmacy individually, because its less fun then chemical engineering.

Are you already in school? If not, I would wait until you are a sophmore and have some general education credits (and chemistry) under your belt. These two careers are very different, as noted. There are jobs in both–pharmacy would pay better at first but plateau, while chem eng would progress upward more quickly. If you go eng, I would do Georgia Tech. Rutgers is also good overall, and you could always transfer as a junior.

Your working enviroment is going to be very different between the two. In pharmacy you will most likely be working in a pharmacy whereas in Chemical Engineering you will be in a factory or research. I don’t know what the curriculum is like in pharmacy but if you aren’t good at Math and computers then you will find any type of engineering very difficult. ChemE although you do take chemistry, you do ALOT of math.
