Is it even worth it? In Texas they only pay Cphts starting out around $10 an hour is this even worth the $165 price of the test which I might not even pass the first time around. I already paid the $45 for trainee status which is also required in Texas, so I was looking to make use of it, but anyways thanks for all your comments.

If you are self-motivated, than a study-at-home course like one offered by http://www.rxtechschool.com may be helpful. I ordered one from them and used it to successfully pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) on the first try more than 2 years ago.
While certification was not required where I work (an independent, retail pharmacy) most of the other techs were certified and I felt that it would help make me more valuable to my employer. I believe it has done that for me.
If you don’t like the idea of studying on your own, consider a community college course. While these would be more expensive than a study-at-home course, the instructors you have may be able to recommend you to local employers.
Personally, I am glad I became certified. The exam was difficult and my first thought after taking it was that I had failed. But I passed. Now if I ever wanted to find a better job, I can tell potential employers that I am certified. The certification formalizes my knowledge and shows that I am serious about being a pharm tech.
