I’m going to be a senior at the University of Michigan in the fall. Im going to take the PCAT this fall, and am confident I’ll do well. Im a bio major, and am pretty intelligent all around. My GPA will probably be around a 3.6 when i graduate, now its about a 3.5. The thing I’m worried about is I have no work/volunteer experience. I didnt know pharamacy was what I wanted to do until recently. Is the volunteer/work part of this all going to doom me? Also, what are the chances of getting in later in life. Say if I graduate, work for a year or so, and apply? Are you more likely to get accepted fresh out of undergrad/young, or does it not matter? I will have all prereqs done as well.

It’s not going to doom you. Yes, it’s competitive, but a 3.6 from Michigan is quite good. Try and get some experience now. Volunteer at a pharmacy if you have to. It’s not that hard to get a tiny bit of experience.
That way, in the interview or on the application, you can talk about it and what you’ve gained from that brief experience and how you want more of it.
I don’t know if it will necessarily doom you, but it will hurt your chances. As I am sure you already know, admission to pharmacy school is very competitive and work experience can really help you get in. You can figure that most people applying are going to have good grades and score well on the PCAT. You will need to probably find something that sets you apart from the “average” applicant.
One other thing to consider is that most pharmcay schools will give preferential admission to “in-house” applicants. If the univesity you are currently enrolled has a pharmacy program there, you will most likely have a better chance of geting in there as opposed to other schools.
Work experience is not a huge part of the application process. They do want you to know what you are getting into though. If you can volunteer over the summer at a hospital pharmacy, that would be good, but don’t over stress it. If you do well on the PCAT that is much more important. Usually the admitted class is a mix of young people and older more experienced people going back to school. I would apply straight away, a year won’t make much difference. If you do well on the PCAT and apply to more than one school, I would definitely say you’ll get in.
